Both of us have been going through a lot of stuff lately. You know how life gets.

Anyway, I saw Man of Steel today <strike>against my better judgment</strike> in the hopes of possibly reviewing it for those of you like me who don't trust professional critics. By the time I left the movie, the originally-planned review had become a rant. And, at the risk of boring you all to death <strike>because this is pretty freaking long</strike>, here's my rant about what's wrong with Man of Steel.

WARNING: SPOILERS FOR Man of Steel

Problems with Man of Steel:

Honestly, do the people who made
this movie understand anything about real weather?

Tornado physics are messed up in
the movie. That tornado was ridiculously freaking huge. And people
from Kansas would understand the right way to react to a tornado (which came
out of nowhere without any sort of storm or anything, which is also realistic (sarcasm wholeheartedly intended)).
They wouldn't have all run to a freaking overpass—that kind of reaction gets
you killed. You get out of your car and get in the ditch, cover
your head with your hands, and wait it out. That's your best chance
of survival. Hanging out under an overpass will KILL YOU.

And Jonathan Kent was just
standing there all stoically, waving his hand like nothing was
going on. Uh...in a real
tornado, he wouldn't have had the time
to stand there stoically and tell Clark “No, son, it's okay, I'm
ready to die so no one finds out what you are” with a freaking hand gesture. He'd have been
thrown by the winds way
before that.

The
whole tornado scene was just bad.

Lois Lane could not possibly be
wearing what she was wearing in Canada without being incredibly
uncomfortable and frostbitten. I mean seriously. If “it gets down
to 40 below at night” as Colonel Hardy suggested, she would have
needed MUCH more protection from the cold. She should have gotten
frostbite all over her freaking face, the way she was dressed. And
the coat she was wearing was nowhere near thick enough to protect
her. Ugh.

Jor-El: We felt like Krypton had
lost something really important: the ability to choose. So we
wanted to change that by having the first natural birth in a long
time...and then sending our son to a whole new planet...where his destiny will be to be a bridge between Krypton and Earth. But don't
worry, he totally has a choice in it all. But he has to do
this. It's his destiny.

...um...doesn't that sort of
sound like the same sort of thing that was going on on Krypton?
Children born with a specific purpose to their lives? But
seriously, Kal-El definitely has a choice. He doesn't have
to do anything with the codex implanted within his cells or
anything. He doesn't have
to care about Kryptonians and humans working together. Not at all.

The
Jesus references were kind of annoying after a while.

Clark/Kal-El/Superman
is 33 during this movie; Jesus was 33 when he died and "saved humanity".

Superman surrenders himself to the people who want to turn him over to the
enemy.

He
doesn't fight back, despite the fact that he could; it's
definitely within his power to do so. I mean, he didn't take a beating at that point, didn't know for sure that he could die, but it's basically the same thing.

Seriously...just...ugh.

The
explanations the movie gives for Superman's powers and the powers of
the other Kryptonians don't really make sense.

The
comic book explanation for Superman's powers is that the radiation from
Earth's yellow sun gives him enhanced speed, strength, the ability
to fly, X-ray vision, heat vision, super hearing, etc. etc.

The
movie explanation is something along these lines:

The
sun's radiation gives him X-ray vision, heat vision, superhearing,
etc. etc.

His
enhanced speed, strength, invulnerability, and ability to fly come
from the fact that Earth has less gravity than Krypton.

Which
is fine...except that Superman grew up on Earth, so
Krypton's gravity should have absolutely no effect on him.
It makes sense for that to affect the other Kryptonians, Zod and
his crew, but it should absolutely not affect Superman.

Also,
how the hell does it make any sense that the sun's radiation
doesn't affect Zod and his crew when they're in their suits, but
the minute their helmets (or whatever) are damaged, it just
suddenly affects them? I guess, yeah, Krypton has technology more
advanced than our own, but that just seems farfetched.

Another
thing about the whole powers thing...Superman flies around in space
more than once during this movie. In space.
Sure, he's technically still pretty damn close to Earth, but he's
in space. But then
suddenly when he's on the Kryptonian ship in Kryptonian atmosphere,
he can't handle it? Need I remind you that he was just
in freaking space! Space,
which has a complete lack
of atmosphere altogether! HE WAS JUST IN FREAKING SPACE,
BUT A LITTLE BIT OF KRYPTONIAN ATMOSPHERE ALMOST KILLS HIM?! HOW
THE FREAKING HELL DOES THAT MAKE ANY SENSE?!?!?!

Then
there are the little things...

Like
his costume. Was it really necessary to mess with his costume? It
was perfectly fine except for the fact that they decided to get rid
of the red briefs. They're important. You don't mess that much with a superhero's costume. It's just messed up.

Or
the fact that they sort of perverted the Kryptonian language by
pretending that “S” is a thing in their language, that apparently "means hope," and that's
where the “S” on his costume came from.

How
about the fact that Martha Kent made his costume in the comics? I mean, think about this. It doesn't even make sense that he got his costume where he got it from in the movie. The ship it was on had been sent to Earth over 18,000 years ago. How did a suit with the symbol of the El family get there? And how did it just randomly fit Superman? Ugh.

How
about the fact that they basically decided that secret identities
don't matter? I don't buy at all
the fact that no one except Lois knows who he is. How many times
did she freaking call his name during the second half of the movie?
And no one else who was around her paid attention to that? How
about the fact that Zod and his crew all headed to a specific farm
house outside of Smallville, Kansas? No one noticed that? The
freaking government and army didn't
notice that? <strike>BS</strike>.

How
about the fact that Superman repeatedly slammed, threw, and knocked
his enemies into and through
buildings and trains and gas stations and what not? Things that he knew
would cause widespread damage and potentially deadly harm? I mean, Smallville was practically
levelled by his stupid fight with Zod's underlings! How much
freaking sense does that make? That's not the sort of thing
Superman would do. He would draw his enemies out of town
to limit casualties. All those people he told to go inside because
it was safer? Lots of them had
to have died when the buildings they were hiding inside crumbled
due to the fight. But we're just going to forget about that,
because it obviously doesn't matter.

How
about the fact that practically the entire second half of the movie
was CG, and obviously so?
I understand that when there's a fight scene taking place in the
sky between two superhuman characters or something like that, you
can't actually do that with real people without it being campy.
But I'm pretty sure technology has come far enough that they could
have done those scenes in a more realistic way. (After all, one of
the reasons the makers of this movie had for changing Superman's
costume and stuff was to make the film “more realistic”. <strike>BS</strike>.)

Superman
and Lois decided they were in love after knowing each other for,
like, a day. Maybe two days at the most. I guess it makes sense
according to movie logic; after all, look at any
Disney movie that involves a romantic relationship of some kind.
Cinderella fell in love with her prince charming after a couple of
hours at the very most. I mean, seriously. Still kind of stupid,
though.

Superman,
according to comics lore, never
drinks. But there's a scene in Man of Steel
in which he's seen drinking a Budwiser. Goodbye straight-edge
Superman, hello potential alcoholic.

And
then there's the biggie. The HUGE thing that just ruined the movie
for me (not that it wasn't already ruined because it was AWFUL).

Superman's
a murderer.

Yep,
according to this movie, Superman is a murderer. Sure, he was
saving a bunch of people from getting killed, but he killed
Zod in order to save them.
Superman is a boy scout. He has ridiculously black-and-white
morals. I find it annoying as heck, because the world isn't
black and white, but that's part of Superman's personality.
Except in this movie.

Why
exactly couldn't he fly
Zod out of the building? Why couldn't he tighten his headlock on
him and knock him out? Why couldn't he do something, anything
else other than kill him? Superman always
finds another way. I mean always.

But
I guess that's too straight-edge for 2013. Superman's a pansy unless he can kill someone.

Perhaps
the biggest problem I have with this whole thing is that Superman
didn't care.
Sure, immediatley afterward, he was pissed, mad at himself,
depressed. But that really didn't last very long. The next
thing we see is him telling the general to stop trying to figure
out “where he hangs his cape” in a very typical superhero-banter way. Sure, he recently killed a
guy, but he doesn't seem to care at all. Back to the banter.

If
they really had to have him kill Zod <strike>which I think they
definitely could have gotten around, but whatever</strike>, they should
have had some
sort of closure with the whole thing. But what happens is that
Superman kills Zod and immediately moves on. There's no
discussion whatsoever of the event. It's just “whelp, bad
guy's gone, we're good”. No closure, no discussion of the
fact that Superman just killed someone, no reflection at all on
whether or not there was another way. It's just “kill the bad
guy and move on, forget about the whole thing,” ignore the
fact that the man we want our children to look up to just got
away with murder simply
because the other guy was going to commit genocide. I get
that Zod was a jerk. I get
that he needed to be stopped. BUT SERIOUSLY, THINK
ABOUT IT! SUPERMAN JUST KILLED SOMEONE! SUPERMAN! SUPERMAN!!!

Okay,
granted, some of these things are nit-picky. Most people won't care
about the comics-specific stuff. But how about the crappy CG
throughout the second half of the movie <strike>pretty much making 3D
obsolete</strike>? How about the lack of logic in a lot of this movie?
(Jor-El and his whole “You have the privilege of choice, but your
destiny is to do what I want you to do” thing? The lack of
scientific logic in relation to Superman and the other Kryptonians'
powers?

Finally, there's nothing original about this film. Seriously. It's a mix of Avatar, Brave New World, Star Trek (2009), Secret Origins (Justice League Animated), and pretty much any disaster movie ever. Not to mention we really don't need another Superman origin story. Who doesn't know where Superman came from? Who doesn't know who he is and how he got his powers and all that jazz? Moreover, this is basically a repeat of Superman II from 1980. Same old Zod wants revenge thing. Ugh.

I was planning to give this movie "X out of 5 stars" before seeing it. However, this movie actually failed to live up to my <strike>extremely low</strike> expectations. A star is a positive thing, a badge of pride, a mark of achievement...so Man of Steel gets nothing, in my book. Absolutely nothing. Nothing, nothing, nothing.

You
want to know what I want
to see? A live-action film of The Death of Superman.
That's what I want to see. Because, as Batman put it during
Infinite Crisis, the
last time Superman really inspired anyone was when he was dead.

Life gets busy sometimes. You know how it goes.

Anyway, this post takes a look at the new kids' movie, Escape from Planet Earth.

Now, I know what you're thinking. "This is a kids' movie, why should I care about it?" Well, I'm going to tell you why. This movie is one of the few (relatively speaking) films that passes the Bechdel Test.

What's the Bechdel Test, you ask? It's a test that became popular through Alison Bechdel's comic Dykes to Watch Out For, in a 1985 strip called The Rule. The test names three criteria for a movie:

It must have at least two (named) women in it

who talk to each other

about something other than a man.

Let's use this test to examine Escape from Planet Earth. First of all, there are four named women that I can think of off the top of my head: Kira Supernova, Lena Thackleman, Io, and Gabby Babblebrock.

The second criteria is that at least two named women talk to each other. Kira and Lena talk to each other on several occasions throughout the film. The third criteria is that they talk to each other about something other than a man. Kira and Lena's discussions are rarely about a man, but rather about plot-specific events, including the plot's main conflict. So Escape from Planet Earth definitely passes the Bechdel Test.

What strikes me most about the fact that this film passes this test is that it's a kids' movie. I might be biased, being a woman myself, but I think it's incredibly important for films, especially those meant for kids, to be progressive when it comes to gender, among other things. Giving these female characters bigger parts than just being eye candy or being there to have some female presence in a film is a big, progressive step for movies to make. And showing kids that women can have meaningful impacts on plots in films and other stories is important if we want to move toward true gender equality.

This sounds really preachy, and I apologize for that, but I really do think this is an important thing. What is perhaps most telling about this whole idea, that few movies actually pass this test (follow the link to the Bechdel Test above and you'll see what I mean), is the fact that I walked out of the theater after seeing Escape from Planet Earth surprised.

Surprised because a female character (outside of a superhero team movie, most of which don't pass the Bechdel Test, by the way) had a meaningful impact on the outcome of the plot. Surprised because the focus wasn't always on the men, but was on the women in the film, as well. Surprised because the women in the movie actually had meaningful conversations with each other.

Again, I know this sounds preachy, but I hope that in the future, seeing things like this in movies won't be surprising. Here's to a brighter future in films with more Rocket Moms and heads of mission control centers!

Since finding this Etsy shop, Uniquely Yours Bridal, through Pinterest, all I seem to want to do is begin amassing nerdy wedding accessories to eventually haphazardly combine when (if?) I ever get married.

Needless to say, with Valentine's day so close and ooey-gooey hearts emblazoned on everything...wedding fever is stirring up.

But just look at these beauties! How could you NOT want to get married... remarried... have a fake wedding with your latest fan obsession?

By far this Harley Quinn themed garter is my favorite.

Of course, though, there are plenty of other comic book characters to choose from, and options for Whovians and other fandoms too!

Whether for cosplay, Valentine's day, or the big wedding, I encourage you to check out this unique Etsy shop!
After scrounging around the internet and finding a copy with English subtitles, I finally found the time to watch it.

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">
Tiger & Bunny is a unique blend of the comic book superhero and anime. This anime embodies one of the first real attempts of Japanese popular culture to create superheroes using Western conventions. While Japan has plenty of its own superheroes, they all differ from Western superheroes in many ways (I can definitely go into more detail on this if people would like; however, for the time being, I'll leave it at that). Tiger & Bunny, however, features around half a dozen superheroes who fit rather well into the Western idea of costumed heroes (aside from the mech use, which is a very Japanese twist).

Rather than spoil the anime for anyone who might be interested in watching it, I'd just like to point out a few of the things I greatly enjoy about it. First of all, it's an anime about superheroes. Who wouldn't love that?

Secondly, Tiger and Bunny are two of the coolest characters ever. They're amazing partners (even if their partnership is reluctant at first) who show that teamwork and friendship are incredibly important.

And Kotetsu T. Kaburagi (Wild Tiger) is one of the best fathers in any medium of popular culture. No joke. He loves his daughter so much it's not even funny. Sometimes I wish Kotetsu was my dad!

Tiger & Bunny is currently being released in English on iTunes (sixteen episodes currently released). However, I recommend the original Japanese with English subtitles (if you don't mind reading subtitles). You can stream subbed episodes of Tiger & Bunny at VIZ Anime. There's also a manga (which I haven't gotten around to reading yet), although the manga came out after the anime (which is somewhat strange; it's usually the other way around). You can find the manga at mangareader.net.

The show is currently only one season long, but there's a movie that's already been released (Tiger & Bunny: The Beginning) and another movie in the works (Tiger & Bunny: The Rising) set to be released in Japan in Fall 2013. The first movie will be released on Blu-Ray/DVD with English subtitles and will be on sale February 22, 2013. (Anime News Network)

The above examples are only a few reasons to watch Tiger & Bunny. Honestly, getting into anything else would lead to spoilers, and I don't want to spoil anything. I'll just leave it at this: anime + superheroes = AWESOME. So go catch an episode and see what I'm talking about! "It's time to let out a wild roar!"

Via BBC

I first heard about it from this article on Wired's GeekMom. Apparently, even Eccleston, the 9th Doctor, who originally objected to ever reprising his role as the doctor, is reconsidering.

Unfortunately, the sixth Doctor, Colin Baker, denied any knowledge of a multi-Doctor episode on Twitter. He was accused of just "hiding the truth", but he quickly quelled that assumption, and indicated that no one has approached him to reprise his role.

Moffat mentions in the tail-end of this Youtube interview the pressure of not wanting to let anyone down for the big anniversary episode, so even if it is not a multi-Doctor escapade, we can expect something to delight all Whovians.

If the rumor were true, this would not be the first time
multiple Doctors have had to work together. The 10th, 20th, and 30th
anniversaries all featured crossovers with different regenerations. And, an episode with all 11 would be one awesome episode! I would most look forward to Eccleston reprising his role...he was my very first Doctor, and probably my favorite.

However, I have to believe that it's probably not true. Just think of cramming 11 different Doctor personalities into one episode...it would just turn into one giant ego war, and I can't imagine anything getting accomplished at the end of the episode (except leaving fans with a lot of unanswered questions!)

These Valentine's cards are a snarky refreshment from the abundance of corniness and gushy romance.

Read between the lines!
They sell for $13.50 for a pack of 6. Hopes and SpeculationI wasn't going to post anything new until I revamped the layout and look of the site--but I was too excited about this to wait! I wanted to post earlier (my boyfriend and I were two of the first to watch the video) but I've been on the go all day.

This morning Satoru Iwata announced Gen VI of the Pokemon Games: X and Y. Going away from colors, we see...

But more importantly, the games are exclusive for the 3DS and are in 3D! Finally, a 3D look at pokemon. The trailer, obviously, is enough to make a Slaking excited.

Although there is a lot of speculation going on, including talk about the legendaries shown and what the "third" game will be called (Z? W?), my friends and I have our own speculations and hopes.

Please, for the love of Pikachu, do not make the fire starter a humanoid fire/fighting type when it evolves. Please! However, upon relooking at the trailer, a few of my friends pointed out that Fennekin appears to be using a psychic move. Fire/psychic? Hell yeah!

We're hoping Chespin is grass/fighting.

Froakie should be water/ice. They have done water/ground too much! Looks like it might use an electric attack, though...

It looks like the game, since it is 3D, will involve more than just walking/running from place to place. Watching the trailer, it appears there will be some elements of a platform game (swinging on vines, the rope bridge, the spider web).

I'm hoping they add something compelling for replayability that I, personally, would be interested in. I know plenty of people who log hours upon hours with the Pokemon games (my boyfriend included) but I lose interest after beating the Pokemon League. I hope they add in something to make it more likely for me to keep playing (although the fact it's in 3D might be it!).

We predict that the next Pokemon movie ("Extremespeed Genesect") will spoil a new Pokemon from Gen VI, and we think it's an Eveelution in the short "Pikachu and Eevee Friends". There was already speculation that there might be a new Eveelution in the movie, so the fact that there is a new Generation makes that more likely. We hope it's Ghost or Poison!

Well, that's it for my thoughts and the speculation of my friends and me. Will it come true? I don't know. I just can't wait until October now!
(Anyone not reading is not my concern)

I personally don't think of New Year's Eve as much of a holiday... people just use it as an excuse to get beyond drunk (like most holidays...although that is a discussion for another time).

And while I am not a person who makes resolutions for the new year--frankly, we should work towards and create goals continually, not just during the month of January!--I thought this was as good a time as any to say a couple things about this blog.

I haven't, by any means, been an avid blogger. I'm a shy blogger, just like I'm a shy person in real life. The public audience thing freaks me out, and I feel like I have to please people. But the whole point of this blog was attempting to get over that!

I don't know how much time I will have to blog over the next several months. I hope I can make it a habit.

I struggle with the idea of sticking into a "niche." Obviously this blog was supposed to be about all the nerdy and geeky things in my life... but what I'm beginning to realize is that my interests and passions are constantly changing--I'm really focused on acheiving a healthier lifestyle and I really enjoy cooking/baking. So do I write about that? Or just stick to video games, comic books, and stuff like that?

We'll see. I'm still trying to explore this space, and I guess I should do that instead of being afraid of posting something "off-topic"? After all, this blog is mine!

Anyway, enough of my random personal posting. Although you might start to see more of it. Who knows what 2013 will bring!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02653344656437913625noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7187355391429636220.post-653758767433337492012-12-09T11:32:00.000-06:002012-12-09T11:32:35.199-06:00J!NX Clothing: New League of Legends Swag - Gift Ideas for Him or for HerFinally, J!nx has added a veritable selection of League of Legends clothing, accessories, and plushies... just in time for the holidays, of course!
I decided to share what I gave to my boy for Christmas last year: a Magic: The Gathering EDH deck (which totals 100 cards), each that had a reason I loved him on it.

Basically, it's a geeky version of [this], which I had found through Pinterest before Christmas 2011. I thought using Magic cards fit my boyfriend's personality better, and decided to up the ante of a typical deck of cards by coming up with 100 reasons I loved him and using a playable deck.

However, this could easily be done with a deck of cards like the original idea, or anything else to fit your loved one's personality! A specially-designed deck, Pokemon cards, Yu-Gi-Oh cards, etc. The possibilities are endless. And trust me, this is one gift he truly appreciated and enjoyed.

Honestly, this DIY gift is very simple.

First thing's first: Think of Your Reasons. It's helpful to decide how many reasons you'll need first. All Magic: The Gathering EDH decks have 100 cards, and I figured that was a good even number. If you are using a normal deck of cards, your number is 52. This is the hardest part of this craft. Seriously. But, to give you a few ideas of what I included:
I personally think that the best things to pick are things exclusive to your relationship. Anyone can put generic things on a card... this requires thought and effort. But it's worth it to think of all the reasons he/she gives you that warm fuzzy feeling.

Yes, I did put things like "Your smile" <strike>because it was so damn hard to think of 100 reasons, especially because we had only been dating about 6 months... </strike>but I had plenty of things exclusive to us.

#2: Assemble Your Cards. This part is optional, if you want to use a "playable" deck like I did.

#3: Mod Podge That Shit! All I did was print off a big page of "reasons", cut them up to fit on the cards, and mod podged them on. It's that easy! I did put a little effort into some cards, trying to make the "reason" ironically match up with something from this zombie EDH deck...but that's not necessary at all (and I don't even know if he got it).

#4: Putting it All Together. There are different ways to do this. I put mine in a deck box for full effect. I've seen other versions of people using a hole punch with a deck of cards and using binder rings to make it a "book". Just get creative! There are tons of possibilities.

That's it! Now just await the time he/she opens it.

I was so nervous when I sent this to my boy...we were long distance at the time, since he was in the Army, and he isn't very sentimental. He called me right after he read them all, though, and said it was the most thoughtful thing anyone had ever given him. Now to outdo that present this year....

Whether or not you want to buy them for yourself or as gifts for Christmas, there are some great deals to be had!

The list ended up being really long. To navigate, if you are looking for something specific, I suggest using Ctrl + F to find it. If not, let me know how I can reformat it to make it easier to search through.

What are you going to shop for? I'm probably going to pick up Halo 4 at Target!
The party was great and all, but what I really want to talk about here is not the party, but a particular room in the house. This room was by far the most amazing room I have ever been in. No joke.

The room in question is a room that houses dozens of comic book superhero figurines, posters, and memorabilia. It's a collection that's been in the works since the 1960's, when the owner was just a kid reading comic books. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see his collection of comic books, but I think I might have had an aneurism from the excitement of the whole thing if I'd seen the figurine collection and the comics collection.

So, without further ado, here are some pictures of the awesome collection that words cannot even begin to do justice. (I apologize for the poor quality of some of the photos; I have a pretty old camera, and it couldn't decide what to focus on half the time.)

Honestly, these pictures don't do the place justice. (Again, I apologize for the blurriness of some of them.) Everywhere I looked, there were figurines and statues and posters and life-size cutouts. Every time I looked into one of the cases, I noticed a new action figure that I hadn't before, or a different Batmobile, or a different comic book (of which there were just a few in these collector cases). There were such collectible items as model Batmobiles from nearly every generation of Batman, the entire collection of Lantern rings (all of the colors), and almost every Alex Ross portrait of the Justice League members (including a group shot).

I hope that, one day, far into the future, I can have a collection that's half as good as this one. (And, like I said, this is just the collectible figure stuff. He has a collection of comic books, too, stashed away somewhere!) This is what every fan should strive for, no matter the fandom they belong to.

Not only is this collection amazing, but it's a great source of pride for its owner. He loves talking about his collection! He's a man in his fifties, and the most amazing thing is to see his face light up when you ask him about his collection. I hope I'm that excited about my fanaticism when I'm his age!
Sure, it's a supernatural anime like any other, where things happen that obviously couldn't happen in the real world. And granted, since it's a piece of Japanese popular culture, some things (like the portrayal of Catholicism) must be taken worth a grain of salt.

Ghost Hunt anime

However, there's quite a lot of real-world knowledge to be gained from the anime:

Ghost Hunt can offer a starting point to learning new things about different religious and spiritual beliefs, such as Buddhism, Shintoism, and Onmyōdō, to name a few.

Of course, these are just starting points. The anime gets a lot of things right, but (obviously) it's all adapted into a supernatural anime, so don't assume you'll be able to ward off spirits with a few obsessively-perfected spells from the show.

The debunking that Naru does in the anime is pretty amazing, especially for an anime focused on supernatural happenings (where often the cases are caused by supernatural occurrences).

Looks realistic, no?

For example, how can spoon-bending be faked?

Or why is it that the planchette seems to move when you use a Ouija board with your friends? (You mean it's not ghosts?! Paranormal Activity, you lied to me!)

Or if ghosts aren't causing the poltergeist activity you're experiencing, what is?

There are a few instances of interesting historical Japanese (and Chinese, and British, and American) information being explained, which is pretty cool, especially since most of the information is pretty accurate as far as I've been able to tell.

The anime illustrates how religion, spirituality, and science all mix into one in many countries in the Far East, especially Japan.

For heaven's sake, the team is made up of a ghost hunter, a shrine maiden, a Buddhist monk, a Catholic priest, a medium, and an Onmyoji! If that doesn't show the mix of religion, spirituality, and science, what does?!

The one huge downside I see to this anime is the fact that the anime alone doesn't finish the story. Sure, if you're watching it casually and not really paying attention, it seems to end just fine, with everyone (relatively) happy and the story at a close. But if you go back and really pay attention, you'll notice that there are pieces of the puzzle missing:

Why was Naru surprised when Mai initially gave him that nickname?

Why was Naru's name missing from the nameplate outside the door of his hospital room?

What was Lin talking about that one time he mentioned to Mai that "someone once told me the same thing" in regard to his feelings toward the Japanese?

What's with this Madoka chick hanging all over Lin? Is there something more to that?

Why is Lin protecting Naru so closely? What do Naru's parents have to do with Lin and Naru's (working) relationship?

And why, oh why, is Naru so much different in Mai's dreams than in reality?

Seriously, do they?

Searching for the answers to these questions? Never fear! You can always read the manga!

The anime actually follows the manga fairly well. However, the manga continues for another three volumes after the end of the anime, covering in those three volumes another riveting story called "The Forgotten Children," along with the answers to many of the aforementioned questions.

Most of the manga has been released in America (volumes 1-11), but the final volume (volume 12) has not. Of course, you can always read the manga online. (I recommend MangaFox; great website with tons of manga!) Rather than me spoiling the chance for you to find the answers on your own, follow the above link to read the manga for yourself!

So if you're interested in learning about spirituality in Japan, or learning some fun debunking of supposedly paranormal phenomena, or just watching some awesome supernatural butt-kicking, check out the anime (and manga!) Ghost Hunt. You'll read a pretty great story (if you're not overly critical) and you might just learn a thing or two along the way.

Life has been insanely busy for me, and that doesn't leave me a lot of time to even ponder what I could post on here. But since it's currently Spring Break for me and I happen to have found a little extra time on my hands because of it, I thought I would let y'all know what I've been up to.

I baked cupcakes.

Green Velvet Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes by Flufferwuffer

Kick-ass, St.-Patty's-Day-themed cupcakes.

And they're really green.

I didn't bake them specifically for St. Patrick's Day, though. I baked them for a good friend's birthday. You see, his birthday was March 11, and he's got a thing for the color green.

Now I could have just made Green Velvet Cupcakes and called it good. But I had also been dying to make Irish Car Bomb cupcakes, and with St. Patty's day close enough that I could get away with it, I combined the two.

This was my first attempt at making my own recipe, because I was discovering it's impossible to find a velvet cupcake recipe that is also made with Guinness. I guess there isn't really a market for that, or something.

I haven't had red velvet, blue velvet, or velvet anything very much in my life, so I'm not sure if the texture turned out comparable to true velvet cupcakes, but all I know is that out of the 20 cupcakes my recipe made, they vanished pretty quickly (with some of my friends eating 3 or 4...) and I now have multiple people begging me to make them again.

All the pictures in this post are from a "test" cupcake, one that wasn't as big as the rest because it only had half of the batter. I wanted to take more pictures, but the rest were literally gobbled up long before I could.

Considering I've never formulated a recipe before, I'm pretty proud of that.

However, I know that the following recipe isn't perfect, and I'll probably do some tweaking to it the next time I make it.

But, without further ado, whip up these babies for your St. Patrick's Day bash this weekend:

8 oz bittersweet chocolate

2/3 cup heavy cream

2 T butter

3 T whiskey (optional) (you can also use less if you don't want a strong alcohol taste in the filling)

Cream Cheese Buttercream

2 sticks butter (1 cup)

8oz cream cheese

4-5 cups confections sugar

7 T Irish cream (more or less, to taste) (I used Merry's, but Bailey's is also a good option)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a saucepan, bring the butter and Guinness to a simmer until the butter melts. Stir frequently. Add the cocoa powder and stir until smooth. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly.

Optional: drink the rest of that Guinness while baking. Don't waste the rest of that bottle/can!

Combine dry ingredients (flour, baking soda, sugar) in a bowl.

Combine wet ingredients (eggs, vinegar, buttermilk) in a large bowl, using an electric mixer if available. Add the Guinness mixture and stir to combine. Add the flour mixture, mixing on slow speed. Add the green food coloring and watch the magic happen as you stir.

Put cupcake liners in muffin tins and divide batter up between them, filling them 3/4 full. Reduce oven heat to 325. Bake cupcakes for about 25 minutes.

Ganache Directions:

Chop up chocolate (alternatively, you can use chocolate chips. I used half and half) and place in a medium, heat-safe bowl.

In a saucepan, bring the heavy cream to a simmer.

Pour the cream over the chocolate. Let the mixture melt for a minute or two and then stir to combine. If it doesn't get smooth after stirring, pop into the microwave for a few seconds at a time to help it melt.

Add the butter and whiskey and stir to combine. Set aside and wait for the mixture to thicken to a pudding-like texture (I think it took roughly 30 minutes for mine?). You can put it in the fridge to speed the process along, but make sure to stir it every once in a while.

Cream Cheese Buttercream

With an electric mixer, mix cream cheese and butter until smooth and fluffy.

Add confectioner's sugar a 1/2 cup at a time until it has a stiff but fluffy texture. Add the Irish cream and mix it in.

Pipe Ganache Into the Cupcakes...

Once the cupcakes are completely cool, cut out a cone in the center of each cupcake. I did this with a knife, but I guess you can use an apple corer or something similar. Make sure you don't cut the cupcakes all the way to the bottom. You want to shoot for about 2/3 to the bottom, although I was nervous about screwing up so mine were a little shallow.

Using a piping bag or spoon, get the ganache in those holes. Make sure that your ganache has thickened enough. As mentioned earlier, it should be pudding-like. Refer to the picture above to see how these babies look with ganache in them.

Then the Buttercream...

Using a piping bag, pipe the cream cheese buttercream on top of your cupcakes.

DONE! Now eat your pretties!

For my cupcakes, I ran into a couple snags. #1, my electric mixer broke while I was mixing the buttercream. Like, completely shorted out. So my buttercream didn't end up as thick as I would have liked, and since I had never used a piping bag for frosting before they didn't turn out as pretty as I wanted either. But, all in good time!

**NOTE** As mentioned earlier, I've never formulated a recipe before. I know this one needs work! One friend commented to me that at first he thought the cupcakes were rather bland, but the sweet from the ganache and frosting balanced that well. Even so, I will probably tweak the recipe the next few times I make them to try and get them just right. You can try adding more sugar or more cocoa, but I can't guarantee they'll turn out!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02653344656437913625noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7187355391429636220.post-57343939137414824892012-02-11T22:19:00.000-06:002012-02-11T22:19:45.676-06:00A Geek Girl's Reflections on Valentine's DayValentine's Day is in a few days. Even if I wasn't grimly aware, looking at my stats page for this blog is enough of a reminder.

Why? Because every semi-romantic post I've ever put up suddenly has more hits than every other page. Apparently you nerdy boys really need help picking out ways to propose to your gal, whether through Harry Potter or Pokemon or even Munchkin. Who couldn't resist giving that special someone rainbow roses?

Let's not forget the "5 Gift Ideas for Your Geek Girl" post I wrote up last year (although, I think, some of the shops I talked about are temporarily closed, I think...

So, I thought about writing up another gift idea post to replace last year's. Or at least expand on it. After all, there are plenty of other places to get perfectly fantastic gifts for a nerdy woman like myself.

But, I didn't have the heart for it. Then, I randomly came across a blog post where a woman gushed about all the wonderful Valentine's Days she's had. And I realized why I didn't have the heart for throwing out gift ideas this year.

I've never had a memorable Valentine's Day.

Honestly. I dated a guy for three years, and I couldn't tell you one thing he got me for V-day. I don't know if he ever got me anything. I guess he must have, but it was never more memorable than a rose and a tiny box of chocolates. Because for all the work and thought I put into my gifts to him, there was no way that feeling was ever reciprocated back. Should have been my first hint that relationship wasn't going to work.

No, despite recanting a poem for my lover, writing out a letter describing exactly how I felt about him (in my own handwriting; who does that anymore?) that was bound with ribbon, writing out the lyrics to our song as the background to a framed picture I drew for him, making his favorite dessert just perfectly as a surprise, wearing his favorite outfit just to attract a lingering gaze for that much longer...yeah, I got nothing.

You can call me bitter. I guess what it boils down to is that I've simply put too much work into Valentine's Day to really expect that day to be worth it.

Yeah, I get all the talk about it being a commercial holiday, blah blah blah...I just used to like acknowledging it as a day where it was socially acceptable to openly adore the guy I was head over heels for.

So, I'll be dully flipping Valentine's Day the bird as it passes on my calendar. On the bright side, there will be many more February 14ths in my future...one of them is bound to burn into my memory, right?

<strike>(still wouldn't mind some chocolate bullets, though)</strike>

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02653344656437913625noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7187355391429636220.post-9003009119418089342012-02-10T13:16:00.000-06:002012-02-10T13:16:17.970-06:00750 Daily Words in an Attempt to Become a Writer AgainHey, a new post! That means I haven't altogether abandoned this blog yet!

That's the good news. The other good news is that I've been writing a lot lately. But everything I've been writing doesn't really have a place here.

I discovered a site called 750Words, and I promptly signed up and started writing. Surprisingly, the site was suggested to me by a few of my professors as a way to force oneself to write every single day. Because, writing every day makes you a better writer? (or some sort of logic like that)

So, I've been writing. Daily. I really like the site, because the badge system encourages you to come back and write every day and never miss a day or oh-my-fucking-god you just lost your 10-day-streak badge and now you have to start all over. Which happened to me. I missed my sixth day (although I blame the fact that my computer refused to connect to the internet the entire day). When I went back to the site the next day and discovered I had to start over, I sat staring at the screen for a good 10 minutes<strike> in mock fury</strike> while my right eye twitched.

Anyway, want to know the really super cool thing about the site? THIS

How fucking nifty is that? Those are my stats from writing today. Each day the site gives stats on how fast you typed and how quickly you finished, what your mood is, and your mindset. While it isn't always completely accurate, I think it's really fucking cool, so you should too.

In short, I just wanted to let anyone still bothering to read this blog know that I'm not giving up--yet. I'm still writing, and I still have my other, class blog to worry about, but I am too stubborn to completely give up on this, too.

Also, I'm thinking about recruiting another author to post on here. Not sure we're going to go through with that, though.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02653344656437913625noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7187355391429636220.post-4739082833795785582012-01-22T20:43:00.000-06:002012-01-31T14:44:40.652-06:00Is This Thing On?I've been putting this post off for entirely too long.

Do I even remember how to do this anymore?

Well...*ahem*...I feel as if anyone still devoted enough to read this deserves an apology from me.

It's been...well, let's be honest here--months--since I last updated this blog. I always meant to come back! I swear! (Doesn't this, what I'm doing right now still show that? I'm a good blogger...? Yeah, right.

Well, sorry. If that means anything at this point.

Here's the short-and-sweet version of my absence:

Something totally happened in my life to bring everything I ever wanted and hoped and dreamed to come crashing down. I couldn't muster up the ambition to keep doing anything. My classes suffered, and this blog suffered as well. I was fully ready to never write another post again. I just didn't have it in me. Eventually, things started to look up, but I felt guilty for having not updated. So I procrastinated (I'm good at that!). And procrastinated. Then things got really good, but I was still too guilty to write.

Then I realized that I wasn't exactly happy with how this blog was going anyway. I looked back at my last dozen or so posts and sort of thought to myself Who the hell was writing this? Because it isn't me. Now that I think about it, I was way too concerned with getting traffic and comments to write like myself. I was starting to lose my own voice in the mess of utter shit I didn't care about but I thought other people would.

So overall I realized that I felt guilty, but also didn't know what the hell to do to start up again. How do I explain to anyone still reading that I want to change things, but don't know how? Well, this is me trying.

I don't know if I'm going to be updating Cheap Geeks Anonymous anymore. I definitely want to, but I still have to figure out how to make this something I am happy to do again.

In the meantime, the catalyst that urged me to write this post is the fact that I had to start up a Wordpress blog for an online class I'm taking this semester. While most of what I'm writing over there is primarily for class, you may find what I'm writing there interesting. If so, click to visit it: Real Women Wear Corsets. I can't say I will be updating here again for a while, so if you want to read my writing again on any sort of regular basis, you'll have to pop in over there.

What I'm hoping is that the class awakens the enthusiasm I used to have for blogging. I hope that it gets rid of the "people-pleaser" part of me that cares how many comments or visits my blog gets, and coax out the me that just wants to fucking write. And hey, if people like the just fucking write! me, then I'll gain readership that way.

So. That's what's new.

Until next time,
