A Furry Adventure!

Yesterday, BigJones and I went missing in the line of duty so that we could go get our new kitten!  We decided a few months ago that we needed to adopt a kitty friend for Loki, my little baby.

Since I moved out of my parents’ house and into an apartment, taking Loki with me, he’s been lonely.  BigJones and I can’t be around enough to give him all the attention he craves.  So we started looking at the Central Dakota Humane Society’s website and found Izabell (formerly Neyla).

Well, CDHS is in Mandan, our hometown, which is 2.5 hours away from Fargo.  So going to get Izabell yesterday took about 6 hours out of our lives…and it ended up being a mini adventure for us.

The drive to Mandan was pretty uneventful.  However, when we got into town and headed towards the Humane Society, it started sprinkling.  No big deal.  We went inside, signed the paperwork, and picked up our darling Izabell…

Next thing we knew it was pouring outside.  It was like a dam broke in the sky.  BigJones ran out to the car (parked three feet away from the door) to get the pet carrier and he got soaked.  Like, he just walked out of a pool soaked.  Some of the ladies at the Humane Society told us there was a chance of hail, and we could stay if we wanted.  But we just wanted to get our cat and go back to Fargo!

I needed to stop at my parents’ house before heading back, and as we drove there, my poor car got pelted by pea-sized hail like a dart board gets riddled with dart-holes.  I wish I would have taken pictures.  But I was trying to calm poor Izzy down.  She was scared!  And she has the cutest little meow—you know, the innocent, high-pitched, cute little “mew!” that you can’t help but swoon at!

Well, we pulled my car into my parents’ garage and waited the storm out with my dad, who just returned from work.  There was a tornado warning and a flash flood watch; the sewers were flooded and the streets were like mini rivers.

Well, a half hour later, it all stopped as soon as it started.  Looking at the radar, the storm was moving southeast, and Fargo is directly east of Mandan-Bismarck.  But with another bad storm moving in from the west, BigJones and I left hoping the first storm would move south quickly so we would miss that one and outrun the second.

The drive back was pretty uneventful, too.  We got sprinkled on a little but other than that, nothing!

Izzy had no troubles adjusting to our apartment.  She slinked around like the curious kitten she is, and she’s already found her favorite places.

There are only two unfortunate things:  Izzy has the sniffles (but we think it’s improving).

And…

Loki’s having trouble accepting her.  I didn’t think it would be easy for him.  He’s just scared of her.  He runs away, and if she gets too close he’ll growl a bit and get the f*ck away from her leave.  I think after a while he will adjust.

So, that was our Furry Friday Adventure! What do you think of our new princess, Izabell?  Do you have any tips to help Loki adjust?

  1. LOL I had to laugh at Loki's "reaction." Izzy is just precious! I'm glad she made it through the hail storm okay! I have no tips for you...I'm allergic to cats, and haven't had one since I was about 10. :)

  2. Both of your kitties are adorable!

I currently live with 2 kitties and a dog and a bird but have lived with many more animals than that at a time.

I can tell you that time will be the biggest factor in helping Loki adjust. Also, for the first few weeks keeping separate litter boxes and food dishes and everything will help with Loki's anxiety about her.

Good Luck! Keep us posted on how they adjust. :-)
