Cheap Geek: Saving on Video Games

Paying too much for video games?One of the banes of being a gamer is the high cost of buying new games to play.  No one loves shoveling out $60 or more every time an interesting game is released (especially me!).  The good news is, just like almost everything else in life, there are multiple ways to save money on video games!  Many people will tell simply tell you to buy games used instead of new.  While there is no problem with that, there are others that frankly just prefer new games.  There are many, many ways to buy a game brand new and still save tons of money (sometimes more than buying used!)
Here are some of the better ways:
  • Preorder
    • What? I can save money by preordering games?  Don’t I have to pay full price?”  Yes! You can save lots of money by preordering the games you want and getting them before all your friends!  And yes, this will also require you to pay full price (or near full price)--up front, anyway.  One of the best ways to save money on video games, especially new releases, is preordering.  Wal-mart Preorder Video Game DealsMany websites--Wal-mart, Amazon, Newegg--often offer gift card deals when you preorder.  For example, at the writing of this post, Amazon is offering $20 credit when you preorder Portal 2.  Plus, you get $5 off.  How sweet is that?  You pay full price, but with the gift card coming back to you, it’s as if you paid $35.99, or 30% off.  The best way to use these deals is to continue preordering.  Take that $20 credit you got from your first preorder, and use it to preorder another game that offers $20 back.  Make sense?  You continually get $20 (30%) off the game before it even hits shelves.

  • Wait.  Just Wait.
    • Not too long!  While browsing the net for video game deals, I’ve noticed something.  Usually, two or three weeks after a game is released, stores start lowering prices to compete with other stores.  Many times, the price of a just-released game ($59.99) will be dropped down to $39.99, a savings of 30%!  All from simply waiting after the game was released. If you want to take this route, I suggest doing a lot of shopping around.  Don’t just go to one store.  Check Target, Best Buy, Wal-mart, Amazon, Newegg, or any other you can think of to see which ones have the lowest price that week.  Granted, you can always wait for a much longer period of time and watch the game’s price slowly fall throughout stores.

  • GameflyGamefly Logo
    • Gamefly is the Netflix of video games.  Once you have a subscription, you receive games in the mail, play them as much as you’d like and send them back when you’re done.  Just like Netflix, you can choose to have one, two, three, or four games out at a time.  After you send one back, the next game in your queue (as long as it’s available) is sent to you.
    • Having a Gamefly subscription can really save you money if you’re the type of gamer who likes to play through new games quickly and move on to the next one.  Instead of purchasing each game, get it in the mail and send it back once it’s finished.  My boyfriend and I like to use Gamefly to try out new games before actually purchasing them.  We can try out just-released games and send them back if we’re not impressed.  No money wasted on buying the game!  If you do end up wanting to keep a game, Gamefly gives you the option of buying a game you have out, usually at a discounted price.  And the longer you stay a member, the better discounts you get for buying games.  If interested, you can sign up for Gamefly and get a one month free trial right here.

  • Buy.  And Sell.
    • I’m not a fan of this method, mostly because I like to keep the games I like, but some people swear by it.  Basically, buy a game, play through it, and when you’re done head to one of the many stores that purchases games like Gamestop or Best Buy and sell it back.  Alternatively, some online stores like Amazon give you store credit for your games, or rewards sites like Swagbucks will give you points for trading in your used games.
    • I guess, used with a method from above, like preorder deals or buying the game new at a discount, you could potentially get profit from selling games back.  But, I can’t be sure about that, since I’ve never sold a game back.

Readers: What do you think about my money-saving methods? Did I miss something? How do you save money on video games?

Top 10 Technology Sites [Guest Post]

Who subscribes to magazines anymore? If you’re a tech geek or you want to become one, you probably already have RSS feeds set up for a number of news sites that get you the information you want about new technology and shiny new gadgets. And a little gaming news on the side doesn’t hurt either. If you don’t already have your finger on the pulse of the technology world, here are a few fantastic sites to get you started. These are some of the most popular and most-trusted technology news sites on the web (in no particular order).

1. Gizmodo: Gizmodo is a great site for everything geek, mostly focusing on gadgets and other fun stuff for the little geek in all of us.

2. TechCrunch: Not really shying away from the geeky aspect of technology, TechCrunch is less a place to go for new gadgets than it is a site to look for business news about hot tech companies and reviews of online technologies like new social media websites and applications.

3. Mashable: One of the most Tweeted sites on the internet, Mashable concentrates its news on social media and online applications. If you are looking for the latest information on Facebook privacy settings, this is probably the site for you.

4. Wired News: One of the top print magazines in geekdom—online! If you’ve already let your print magazine subscription lapse (hopefully in the name of saving a few trees), you don’t have to be denied all the cool information that comes through Wired.

5. Slashdot: Think of it as a combination of Wired and Science. Slashdot goes beyond just reporting tech news into posting stories from the science world that relate to geeks everywhere, like the future of space travel.

6. Cnet: It’s like Consumer Reports for geek crowd. Cnet reviews just about every piece of hardware and software available on the market today. They are widely respected because of the depth and breadth of their knowledge and expertise. Before you buy a new shiny gadget, computer, or piece of software, check here first.

7. Engadget: One of the top names in tech news, Engadget focuses its website mostly on new gadgets (as its name might suggest), but it also covers tech business news.

8. ArsTechnica: Another great tech news site, ArsTechnica covers the gamut—from product reviews, to business news, to info on new and upcoming video games and console systems.

9. Boing Boing: Not so much into product reviews, Boing Boing focuses its site on more interesting, quirky, and out-of –the-way tech news, and it usually has a sense of humor. If you’re looking to go a little off the beaten path, give it a try.

10. Technology Review: The technology news website for MIT, this site packs a punch on stories about new and emerging technology and the way that science is making our world a better place (for better or for worse).

About the author: Gunter Jameson writes about several topics including travel, minimalism and Pell Grants.

4 Last Minute Geeky Halloween Costumes on a Budget

I totally did not wait until the last minute to figure out a Halloween costume…eh—okay, so I did.  Don’t give me that look!  Do you have any idea how hard it is to not only find myself an awesome costume on a budget, but find one for my boyfriend as well?!  I had to spend a month to convince him to dress up with me (“no costume, no candy!”).

So in every sense of the title, here’s my ways to be Cheap, Geeky, and Anonymous.

  • Steampunk image
    • Sounds easy enough to pull off, right?  Basically, stick with tan, white, or black (iffy) clothing. Try for leather, and find a vest and/or trench coat.  Lots of belts, gold/silver  jewelry (that doesn’t look too expensive).  Ladies, if you have a matching one, wear a corset and lots of skirts.  Bonus if you have steampunk goggles!
  • Superhero’s Secret Identity
    • This couldn’t be easier.  Clark Kent=blue suit, dorky glasses, slicked-back hair.  If you want, carry around a newspaper, journalists’ memo pad, and pen.  Bruce Wayne=black suit/tuxedo, slicked-back hair.  Bonus if you have someone to play a “bimbo”!  Tony Stark would be similar to Bruce Wayne.  Peter Parker=easygoing clothes, laid-back, cocky.  Carry around a camera for bonus points.  These can easily be matched up with a Lois Lane, Selina Kyle, and Mary Jane.  You can also take a comedic spin on some of these; wear a Superman shirt under Clark Kent’s suit, and excessively reveal it whenever someone “might” be in trouble.
  • Hitchhiker
    • Yes, imagethis is in reference to Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.  You can go the movie way, as Arthur Dent in his pajamas, bathrobe, and towel.  You can do anything, just make sure you have a damn towel.  Oh, and so people get it, carry around your copy of the Guide.
  • Book/Movie/Game Character
    • I’m not talking about Master Chief, Voldemort, or Batman.   You can pull of a simple costume by using a character from your favorite novel, movie, or video game.  For example, a hobbit from Lord of the Rings.  Robe, fake hair on the feet, and you’re done.  Doesn’t have to be more complicated than that!  Same can apply for a Hogwarts witch/wizard; get a robe and sew one of the House badges on (you can find them for cheap in a lot of craft stores).  Not everyone might know what your costume is if you go with an obscure novel or movie, but you’ll feel cool.  Trust me.

Have any other cheap and geeky ideas for Halloween?  What are you going as?

[Blogger Tutorial] Numbering Comments

This is a question that 99.7% of new or growing bloggers ask.  Some of the more techie bloggers are able to figure this trick out for themselves.  But alas, not all of us grew up thinking that learning HTML would be a killer second language.  So here’s a tutorial to help you out!

ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR TEMPLATE BEFORE MAKING CHANGES.  I beg of you! Even if this seems easy, you have no idea how many people e-mail me saying “Help! I forgot to save my code! Look at my blog! It’s RUINED!” just because they mistyped one little thing or deleted an extra line.  Save yourself the panic attack!  Usually, I open a Word Doc and copy and paste it there.  That way, I know I have the unmarred code in a totally separate place!

  1. Click the Design link on the Blogger Dashboard, then click Edit HTML Code
  2. Make sure you click the box that says Expand Widget Templates that’s right above the text box
  3. Back up your code before making changes
  4. Press Ctrl + F and search for the following code:

  5. Directly above that line, paste this:

  6. Now, press Ctrl + F and search for this code:

  7. Right below that line, paste the following code:

  8. Save and done!  To make sure it’s worked, view one of your posts that has comments, and viola! Awesome numbers hanging out on the right of every comment. Hooray!

As usual, feel free to comment or e-mail with questions or for help. Please keep in mind that if you’ve previously had someone work on your HTML or you have done it yourself, the coding might not be the same, so it’s even more important to save your HTML beforehand!

Get More Traffic With Entrecard!

Entrecard is my most recent addiction.  To be honest, I don’t even remember how I found out about it; I might have seen it on another blog, but since joining I’ve discovered that many blogs I follow already have Entrecard and I never noticed before.

What is it?
Entrecard is an “online business card” that you use to advertise your blog for FREE.
How does it work?
  Basically, you sign up and put the Entrecard "button" on your site (you can see mine on the right sidebar...it has the yellow bar with the "E" in the corner).
You start out with a certain number of credits.  Credits are "currency" you use to advertise on other peoples' blogs.  The amount of credits it costs for you to advertise on other blogs and what it costs for others to advertise on your blog varies by demand.  The more people who want to advertise on a blog, the more credits it costs.
So, you simply go around and find blogs you'd like to advertise on and purchase an ad with your credits.  Others will "pay" to advertise on your blog, too!  You also have the option to decline an advertisement if it isn't relevant to your blog!
 Then, to earn more credits, you "drop" on other sites.  Basically, this is just going to their blog and clicking on that yellow bar under their Entrecard.  You get 1 credit for every drop, and can drop 300 times a day (you also get credits for people running ads on your blog)!
And the best part is it's all totally FREE!

Since I started using Entrecard I get a lot more traffic to my site.  Granted, a lot of the traffic are people just "dropping" on my site, but I have gained a few valuable readers, and I've also found many fantastic blogs out there.

I hope you decide to check it out!
Click Here to get started on Entrecard!

And guess what? If you sign up, let me know and I'll buy an advertisement for your blog right off the bat to get you started!

Tools for Online Success -- Unanimous Craft

If you're anything like me, you're always looking for ways to improve your blog.  There are so many different resources out there that are spectacular, but many, many more will leave you ripping your hair out in chunks and futilely throwing them at the screen while you cry obscenities.

Wouldn't it be great if there was just one place to go to find those resources and blogging tips that are oh so crucial to online success?

That's where Unanimous Craft comes in!  Though the tagline reads "resources for indie business", there is much to be had on this site for any Etsy shop owner or blogger.  This site allows you to add "resources", which could be anything from an etsy shop to a facebook fan page to an application that allows you to create signatures for your e-mail addresses.  Though I don't consider my blog a "business", I found multiple websites and resources I can't wait to try out!  From there, you can write reviews of resources, bookmark them, and create lists of similar resources to share with everyone.

And that's what I did!

I created a list titled "Tools for Online Success" compiled of resources I found on Unanimous Craft.

Here's what I included in my list:

I love that I can now just head on over to my list for a convenient collective of applications I want to try.  You should seriously check this site out, especially if you have an Etsy shop!

Check it out and tell me what you think!

Changing Image Sizes [Tutorial]

Okay, so after one of my Blogger Tutorials, a reader had a question about changing the sizes of buttons that she picked up from other blogs.  There’s no way to ensure that all buttons will be the same size without adding a bit of HTML!  This would also be helpful to make sure images fit your posts or sidebars, and keeps things the same size so they look nice and neat.

So here we go…

  1. ALWAYS BACK UP CODE BEFORE CHANGING HTML! It will save you lots of potential tears.
  2. Go wherever you need to to change the HTML, whether it’s a specific post, a gadget on Blogger, or the HTML of your template.
  3. Find the portion of the HTML for your image.  It should look something like this: <img src=”url of image”>.
  4. This next part is really easy!  All you have to do to change the size of the image is add height and width elements in by adding height=”desired height” and width=”desired width”.
  • For example, if I wanted to change my button size, which normally looks like this:

And here is the code for that:
    <center><a href="http://www.cheapgeeksanonymous.blogspot.com"><img src="http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/Selana46/CGA%20Stuff/CGAButton.gif" /></a></center>

  • All I have to do to change the size is add the bolded areas:
    <center><a href="http://www.cheapgeeksanonymous.blogspot.com"><img height=”100px” width=”100px” src="http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a306/Selana46/CGA%20Stuff/CGAButton.gif" /></a></center>
    And we end up with this:

  • Save, and you’re done!

__________________________________________________________

So, to answer the original question, all you have to do to make your button page look uniform and tidy is go into the page’s HTML and change/add the height and width to a uniform size for every button.  Depending on how many buttons you have, it might be a little time-consuming, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll be done in no time.

Feel free to link to or share this tutorial, but please credit me!

If you have anything else you’d like me to create a tutorial for, don’t hesitate to ask.  I do have a few others that I have to write yet (sorry it’s taking so long!), but I do promise to get to each and every request.

[Blogger Tutorial] Changing Post Color

Ever get sick of having to change the color of your posts every time you want to post?  Here’s a quick and easy tutorial to change your Blogger template code so your posts are in the color you want!  This is a little different from changing the text color in Blogger’s “Design” tool, as that applies to the whole body, sidebars and all, and this tutorial will change the color for only your posts.

Remember to ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR TEMPLATE BEFORE CHANGING ANYTHING!  This tutorial may be easy, but deleting one little character can seriously mess up your blog!

  1. Click the Design link on the Blogger Dashboard.  Then click Edit HTML Code
  2. Be sure to back up the code before editing!
  3. Press Ctrl + F and search for the following:

    .post

  4. Now, you should see the following lines of code:

    .post {
    margin:.5cm 0 1.5cm;
    border-bottom: 1px dotted $bordercolor;
    padding-bottom: 1.5cm;
  5. Just below this last line, you can easily customize the post color!  Just add the red portion below!

    .post {
    margin:.5cm 0 1.5cm;
    border-bottom: 1px dotted $bordercolor;
    padding-bottom: 1.5cm;
    color:#0000FF;
    }
  6. Change the #0000FF to whatever color code you’d like (that one just happens to be blue).  Just do a search for “HTML Color Codes” to find a list of colors and the corresponding code!

  7. Click Preview to see your newly colored posts!

  8. Click Save to make it official!

----------------------

That’s it!  Let me know if it worked or if you had problems.  And as always, if you have suggestions for new tutorials, just let me know! I love learning this stuff, too!

[Blogger Tutorial] Creating a Label Page

When I asked my readers what they wanted me to write about, making a page that showed posts with a specific label was the first suggestion I received.  When would this come in handy?  Well, say you want all of your giveaways to show up on the Giveaway page.  Or, you have a daily/weekly post and you’d like all of them to show up on one page (sure, you could just click the label, but having a page is so much cooler!)

Well, here’s the tutorial!  Please keep in mind that I am not an expert at HTML coding, but I do test everything out before posting it. Please let me know if you have a problem!

ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR TEMPLATE BEFORE MAKING CHANGES.  Seriously, I can’t stress that enough!  Usually, I open a Word Doc and copy and paste it there.  That way, I know I have the unmarred code in a totally separate place!

Let’s begin!

  • NOTE: Before you start editing, you will need the unique label link. Get it just by going to your blog and clicking on whichever label you want to make the page for, then copying the URL.
  1. Click the Design link on the Blogger Dashboard, then click Edit HTML Code
  2. Make sure you click the box that says Expand Widget Templates that’s right above the text box
  3. Back up your code before making changes
  4. Press Ctrl + F and search for the following code:

  5. A few lines under this, you will see a line that only says </b:loop>
  6. DIRECTLY UNDER THAT, copy and paste the following code:

    <b:if cond='data:blog.pageTitle == &quot;Title of Label Page&quot;'>
    <li class='selected'><a href=’Label Link' title=’Label Name’>Title of Label Page</a></li>
    <b:else/>
    <li><a href='Label Link' title=’Label Name
    ’>Title of Label Page</a></li>
    </b:if>

  7. Change the red parts, and make sure you don’t delete anything else!

  8. Click Preview, and if you see that a new page was created with the correct title, it worked! But you might want to save and click on the tab yourself to make sure the posts show up.

  9. You’re DONE! Wasn’t that easy?

  • Please note that this code will make the page for you; you don’t have to make one beforehand!
  • I tested out this code with the “Guest Posts” page up top.  As you can see, clicking on that tab will show you all posts that have the label “Guest Post”.  So it really works!

------------------

Please tell me if the code works, and if my directions were easy to follow.  I’ve never made a tutorial before, so all feedback helps! Also, if you want to know why this code works and what it does, I can give a very simple explanation if you ask.

Also, if you’re interested in any other tutorials (not limited to Blogger), I would love to make a weekly tutorial post, so tell me what you need to know!

P.S. Feel free to copy or link to this post!  Just PLEASE remember to give me credit! I worked hard on this!

6 Ways Students Can Save on Tech [Guest Post]

image

This is the second guest post by Ashli Norton! I absolutely love this article—so true!  Some of these things can apply to anyone, too, so be sure to read it all!

--------------------------------------

I truly believe the best opportunity to save money is when you are a student in school. I believe this so much, I’ve told adults to go back and take a class or two at their local school to keep student status simply because of the huge savings you can get while being a student. Well, this also includes tech. I will show you six EASY ways to save big on tech as a student.

1. Tout your Student Status.

There is nowhere you should go outside of your home, apartment, or dorm without that beautiful student ID of yours. Why? Because LOADS of discounts are at your fingertips when you use it, including discounts on tech.

For instance, Apple gives $100 off on particular notebooks and desktop computers and software companies small and large give HUGE discounts on software. For instance, Microsoft offers a student version of Microsoft Office Professional Academic for only $80 this is from the original price of $499 for the equivalent Professional version. Now that beats the heck out of your two-for-one meal coupons.

2. Go Open Source.

If you aren’t particularly fond of paying for software no matter how cheap, consider using Open Source software. Open Source software is most times as quality as their paid counterparts, as with any other thing it just varies from app to app.

So instead of purchasing even the discounted version of Microsoft Office you can get Open Office, instead of Adobe Photoshop you can use Gimp, instead of Norton Antivirus you can get AVG Free Anti-virus, and the list goes on. Wikipedia has a great updated list of Open Source apps organized by the genre and platform, so just reference this before purchasing any app you don’t really want to pay for.

3. Review Tech Gadgets and Apps.

If you ever wanted a particular app or a gadget, literally just ask the company for it free in exchange for a review. You may be thinking, who is going to do that? But not only does my small software company do it all the time, people in the entire tech field do it EVEN MORE.

It’s nothing a great YouTube review of the product in action or a good write up that you share with your friends on Facebook (not just a mention a write-up posted and linked to your friends) won’t get you. You would be amazed at which gadgets and apps you could get for free with just a review!

4. Become a Campus Rep.

You may be asking what is a Campus Rep, well a Campus Rep is a student hired by a company to introduce particular brands and products on campus to the other students. The Campus Rep can do this in many ways approved by the company and the most notable tech companies are almost ALWAYS hiring Campus Reps like Apple, Dell, and Microsoft to just name a few. Campus Reps usually get the company’s product(s) for FREE, yes I said it FREE.

For instance, I have heard that besides the Apple Campus Rep’s wages, they also get to use a notebook the entire time they are a Campus Rep - SCORE! Now how to become a Campus Rep you ask, either go to CampusHero or perform a good search in your favorite search engine - it’s fairly easy to find. Not only does becoming a Campus Rep for a company save you money on the tech you would usually have to buy, but it gives you shot at a job that flexes with your student schedule - what’s better than that.

5. Get it used.

You don’t always need the newest technology, which is great because there are ways to save on some CURRENT used technology - CURRENT being the key. I mean who wants a used Apple II for their main computing needs? You can purchase refurb computers from places like Apple and Dell for computers, printers, and monitor to not only save money, but in some cases get a longer warranty.

You can also save by buying others’ used current devices, especially on popular current devices like the Google Android, Apple iPhone, or Apple iPod from places like providers that sell the particular device or gadget like AT&T. SaveMoneyCelluar.com, Buy.com and the usual eBay. Just be very careful purchasing from eBay, we’ve all heard our share of horror stories.

6. Always use coupons.

I’m not even a student and I don’t dare make a purchase without first searching for coupons, especially when making purchases online. You have all the time in world to find a coupon before your purchase online, it’s totally different than shopping in-store so take advantage of this. I don’t know of many tech gadgets or apps that don’t have posted coupons online so look for them and use them. Some of your favorite sites should be Retail Me Not and Coupon Cabin .

If you can’t find them at coupon sites, ask the company if they have any available. I’m sure they would be happy to provide a coupon code instead of losing a customer.  As a bonus, SOMETIMES (honestly, very rarely) these coupon codes can be used in conjunction with your student discount. Again, just try or just ask!

Now that you have some super student saving advice to use - go and save!

CRAMming for Tests & Guest Blogger Info!

Tomorrow I will be posting the first of two awesome guest posts written by Ashli Norton.  Both posts are back-to-school related, so be sure to check them out!

I’m very honored that Ashli wanted to write for my blog, because she is the co-founder of a software company called SimpleLeap.

SimpleLeap produces a software called Cram, a study aid for Macs, iPhones, and iPods.  Ashli offered to let me download Cram for free to try it out, but unfortunately, I’m a PC user through and through.  I will say, though, that this is one of the few times I wish I had something more than an iPod classic!

If you are a student, or you have a child going to high school or college, you’ll want to check out Cram!  Not only can you study with digital flashcards and notes, but you can take practice tests, user-generated tests, and share your own tests.  After you’ve taken the test, you can track your grades and view your performance compared to previous test results.

I seriously wish I could try it!

If you’re a Mac user, you can even download a free trial.  Might be a good idea to test it out before classes start!

Anyway, keep your eyes peeled for Ashli’s guest posts, and check out Cram!

**Disclaimer:  Though I was offered Cram for free, I had to decline.  Thus, this is not a sponsored post, just a tip by me to check out some awesome-looking software!**

Where to Buy Parts for Your Computer

In response to my call for topics, one reader asked if I could point out where to start searching for laptop batteries.  So that’s what I’m doing!

First…how can this come in handy for you?

Well, imagine that a single part breaks on your computer, and you don’t have a warranty.  In the case of the person who suggested this topic, her battery is just a useless lump that is more likely to burst into flames than power her laptop.

Buying a new laptop (depending on if you want a quality one or not) can set you back $1000!  But replacing a battery is only around $100…depending on the model.

Maybe it’s not the battery that breaks.  Maybe it’s the hard drive.  Or the graphics card.  Replacing one single part is by far less money than replacing the whole computer!

NOTE: Seriously, though, if you’re going to replace a part and you’re not super-tech-savvy, find a techie friend to replace the part for you, especially if you have to take apart the laptop/computer.  And make sure you know the model.  You wouldn’t want to waste money on a part that’s not even for your computer!

Okay, with that over, here are just a couple websites that sell computer parts…and at reasonable prices, I might add!

  • Newegg.com
    • Newegg sells tons of electronics and software!  To find batteries, just click on “PCs & Laptops”, then “Laptop Accessories”, then “Batteries/AC Adapters”.  Newegg also has a Battery Finder, to make sure you pick the right one!
  • TigerDirect.com
    • At TigerDirect, click on “Accessories” then “Batteries".  Simple!
  • CircuitCity.com
    • Go to “Computer and Office”, then “Accessories”, then “Batteries” on the sidebar.

Personally, my boyfriend or I would use Newegg.  They tend to have more and the reviews are usually by people who know what they’re talking about (meaning, they’re techies!).  But TigerDirect and CircuitCity both have really great deals a lot of the time.

I hope this helps!
